SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT OF GALL STONES (CHOLEILITHIASIS) IN AYURVEDA

Gallstones or pittasmari, are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gall bladder due to an imbalance of pitta in your body. The gallbladder holds the digestive fluid called bile that’s secreted in to the small intestine to breakdown fats in to fatty acid. Pittashmari can hinder the functioning of bile ducts. It can also lead to inflammation that can cause infections in the common bile duct.

By themselves, gallstones aren’t discomfort, but they block the movement of bile juice, they become painful. Gallstones can vary in size from as small as a grain of rice to as large as a golf ball. The number of stones differ from person to person too.

There are two main types of gall stones that can form in the gallbladder.

  1. Cholesterol gall stones are the most common type of pittasmari. Often yellowish in colour, these gallstones basically clump of cholesterol that sediment in the bile duct.
  2. Pigment gallstones are dark brown or black in colour and form when your bile has high quantity of bilirubin.

Having diet that’s rich in fats or not getting much exercise can increase your cholesterol and lead to obesity, which can shoot up the chances of cholesterol gall stones forming in your bile duct. Gallstones are more common among older people or those who’ve been diagnosed wit or have a family history of obesity, diabetics or IBP. Pittasmari is also more common in women.

Here are some other factors that lead to pitta imbalances.

  1. Taking medicines to lower your cholesterol.
  2. Losing weight rapidly
  3. Fasting or irregular meals.

Most people with gallstones do not show any symptoms, but that’s not unusual because they tend to appear later on in life. Pittasmari that do not show any symptoms are called silent gallstones. Even if there are no appearances of any gallstone’s symptoms, it’s a good thing to consult an Ayurveda doctor for an annual check-up.

Pain around liver area, right shoulder or back, acidity, vomiting, upset stomach, fever and clay-coloured stools are a few symptoms of pittasmari. If your bowel movements are irregular for more than three months, it could also be proof of chronic bladder illness.Ayurvedic remedies have been used to ease the symptoms of gallstones. Methods like dietary modification, supplements, yoga etc can be used to reduce the effect of pittasmari .

Opting for a liquid diet when suffering from pittasmari is a highly recommended gallbladder stone treatment. The liquids can help flush out excess cholesterol and reduce the number of gallstones. Other dietary changes you can, make is to avoid greasy, fried food like pizzas, fried chicken to maintain healthy levels of cholesterol in your blood.
